Initially an early Iberian settlement, the Bunkers served for centuries as agricultural land (vineyards, almonds, etc) and progressively saw the emergence of summer houses for downtown Barcelona’s citizens.
Just about a hundred years ago, the areas surrounding the Bunkers saw the construction of cheap housing and slums.
In the mid 20th century, Barcelona was growing rapidly and had to accommodate tens of thousands of migrants from other impoverished Spanish provinces.
